Sex is Sticky
Genesis 2:24 says,
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and
hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
God had a very special, very specific purpose for sex. Sex is a picture of what our relationship with Christ is supposed to look like:
- more intimate than any other relationship
- joy-filled
- satisfying-you don't go looking around for others to meet any needs.
- you become a counter-part of Christ
Sex therefore is a very powerful picture. God designed sex like nothing else on our planet. Because it is a symbol of a heavenly relationship, the physical consequences of perverting this beautiful picture are severe. Even if you don't catch an STD or experience an unplanned pregnancy, the consequences are far worse than you can imagine.
Because sex symbolizes one union forever between the Christian and Christ, physical sex is meant to be experienced by one man and woman together only.
Sex was not designed to be something taken lightly. Sex was created very seriously-when you have sex with someone you are literally gluing your soul to theirs. Also, you don't even have to "go all the way" to be thoroughly bonded to someone. You don't have to be physical at all! Sex is so sticky that a young woman can be glued to a guy by telling him about any kind of sexual experience she had. I know of several relationships that started when the girl opened up to a single guy friend about how she was sexually abused or used by a past boyfriend. It didn't take very long before the girl and guy were an item. The guy sincerely felt sorry for her and took on the role as her protector and the girl took comfort in being protected and having someone she could trust. They were very deeply bonded.Hebrews 13:4 Let marriage be held in honor among
all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually
immoral and adulterous.
Some of the couples that start this way get married. Some of them don't and they suffer from being torn off of someone they were pretty well glued to. No matter the outcome of the relationship that started though, consider this-Did God orchestrate that relationship? Was it His perfect plan for their lives to be joined that way? Maybe sometimes. But I believe that most of the time it has more to do with a girl being led by her emotions and not having or using wisdom to know who to talk to, how to talk to them and when the best time to talk would be.
Any kind of sexual situation (Abuse, a question, temptation, struggle etc.) should be discussed with an older, wiser person of your same gender.
Sex is sticky!!!I Thessalonians 4: 3
For this is the will of God, your sanctification:
that you abstain from sexual immorality;4 that each one of you know how to control his own
body in holiness and honor,5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who
do not know God;6 that no one transgress and wrong his brother in
this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you
beforehand and solemnly warned you.7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in
holiness.8 Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards
not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
Fairly recently, I used some Scotch Tape to wrap some Christmas presents. I really love Scotch Tape! It is fabulous-clear, sticky and handy for all kinds of things. So picture this- I took off an unusually long piece of Scotch Tape from off the roll and proceeded to place it on some red wrapping paper. About half and inch of tape goes down and I change my mind about the red paper, so riiiiiiip! Off the tape comes and now I am putting it down on green paper. Well, the first half inch doesn't stick very well because it has the red paper on it, but the next couple of inches goes down until I decide I am not liking how it looks. So riiiiiip! I peel it up, readjust and try again. Some more tape goes down until finally I decide the green paper is not going to match the blue bow I was going to use, so riiiiiiip! Off it comes and I pull out the blue paper. While I am getting out the blue paper, this poor old piece of tape got stuck to my sleeve and took some fuzz and lint with it when I pulled it off.
Finally! The blue paper is ready and the tape goes down! But what happens? Does it stick? Part of it does! But there is quite a bit of tape that still has the red and green paper stuck to it-that part isn't sticking. And what about the part of tape that has some accidental fuzz on it? That isn't sticking either.
Now it is ridiculous to use the tape in the story I just told you, but it is so much more ridiculous to think we can do the same kind of thing with ourselves and sex and think there will be no negative consequences! And just so you know, sex is much stickier than Scotch Tape!
We make choices and give ourselves away and tell ourselves it is not that big of a deal or we bond ourself to somebody else without even realizing we are and we can't comprehend what a big deal it really is.
